The Next Big Thing

Posted by maria nazos on Wednesday, February 13, 2013,
Here is my self-interview in the Next Big Thing meme. Mary Biddinger, author of Prairie FeverSt. Monica, and O Holy Insurgency, has started a self-interview series called The Next Big Thing. I’ve been tagged by T.J. Jarrett (a wonderful poet and friend) to participate. Here’s my response based on my first collection of poems, A Hymn That Meanders which was published by Wising Up Press in June 2011.

What is the working title of the book:

 A Hymn That Meanders.

In Response to Stephen Bloom's Atlantic Article

Posted by maria nazod on Sunday, January 8, 2012,
When I initially saw the consternation on Facebook regarding Stephen Bloom's Atlantic article, "Observations From Twenty Years Of Iowa Life", I wasn't sure what to think. My peers from The University Iowa School of Journalism and Mass Communications all had strong opinions and none of them positive. So, naturally I had to read the article myself. Bloom's article features an extremist's opinion of Iowa, ranging from  describing Iowans as "wasteoids and meth addicts with pale skin and rotted te...

Manuscript "Trailer Park Heart" Selected by Marge Piercy as Runner Up for 2010 Philibrick Poetry Project Award

Posted by maria nazod on Sunday, February 14, 2010,
Terrific news, Gentle Readers.

My chapbook manuscript, "Trailer Park Heart" was chosen as runner up by renowned memoirist, novelist, and poet, Marge Piercy for the 2010 Providence Athenaeum Philbrick Poetry Project Award. Check out the formal announcement on their website.

Naturally, I am pretty stoked. It is the first--and hopefully not the last--major recognition I have received in my writing career. All the same, I hope this shining accolade is akin to that of a chandelier at the end of a l...

In Light of the Darkness...

Posted by maria nazod on Saturday, November 21, 2009,
As per I was writing to a friend today, via email: these past few months, I was on a writerly roll. I wrote so many new poems, and they were great, and they seemed to roll off my pen and into my fingers to be transcribed onto my Mac with all the effortlessness of rain or breath. And I should have heeded the Ching's warning: that this was a powerful time for me, but it would only last for a spell.

And so it did. And just like that, the seeds of inspiration that were shooting their lofty heads ...

More Good News...

Posted by maria nazod on Saturday, October 24, 2009,
I have lived this past week in breathless wonderment. I know that I've long told you, Gentle Readers, of my plans to make 2009-2010 the best year of my life. Well, I forgot, amid all my planning to venture off to glorious places of hummingbirds and volcanoes, in the midst of filling out stacks and stacks of grant applications, and in between planning a winter that will be trisected between Ptown, Western Mass, Costa Rica, and elsewhere, I'd forgotten to live in the present gold moment. And th...
